## TL;DR

A charity that encourages people of Black and mixed heritage to join the UK stem cell, blood and organ donor registers, so that more patients find a match.

## Summary

The African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust was founded in 1996 by Beverley De-Gale OBE and Orin Lewis OBE to find a stem cell donor for their son Daniel, diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 1993. Its story page says there were then only around 500 Black people on the stem cell register; in 1999 a donor was found in the United States, and Daniel became the first Black person in the UK to receive a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor. He died in 2008. The charity raises awareness of the shortage of donors of Black heritage on the stem cell, blood and organ registers and supports patients and families from African, Caribbean, mixed race and other ethnic minority communities. The Charity Commission register records latest income of about £0.6 million for the year ending 31 July 2025.
