## TL;DR

CCR6 marks the T cells that patrol mucosal surfaces such as the gut and airway, and it is the usual way of picking out the Th17 type of helper cell.

## Summary

CCR6 binds CCL20 and directs cells to mucosal tissue, and it is the surface marker conventionally used to identify Th17-polarised helper T cells. In an immune panel it is read together with CXCR3 and CCR4 to assign helper T cells to their functional types, a division that matters when describing what sort of response a tumour or a treatment has provoked.
