## TL;DR

The US defense department's lung cancer research fund, with money listed from 2009. It funds work across the whole path of the disease, from causes other than tobacco to screening, brain metastases and life after treatment.

## Summary

The programme's mission is to support and integrate research from multiple disciplines for risk assessment, prevention, early detection, diagnosis, management and treatment for the control and cure of lung cancer. The page notes that 10 to 15 per cent of lung cancers occur in people who do not smoke and that smoking rates are higher among service members than civilians. Its Areas of Emphasis cover biology and causes (including contributors other than tobacco and oligometastatic progression), prevention of first and subsequent primaries and of recurrence, screening and early detection, treatment including overcoming resistance and biomarkers for treatment decisions, brain and leptomeningeal metastases, and the long-term effects of the disease and its treatment on patients, families and support systems.

The page lists congressional appropriations of $245.5 million for FY09 to FY24 and $20 million for FY26, and 460 awards in FY09 to FY24.

## Notes

- Appropriation totals, award counts and the fiscal-year ranges are the programme page's own figures, read on 4 November 2026; the ranges differ between programmes because each page states its own (some run to FY24, some to FY25), and they are reproduced as given rather than summed or extended.
- The page does not state the year the programme was established; FY09 is the first year of the appropriations range it lists.
