## TL;DR

A US defense department research fund that covers a list of cancers Congress names each year, from bladder and blood cancers to sarcoma and thyroid cancer, including several childhood cancers. It has made about 1,180 awards since 2009.

## Summary

Since FY09 the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program has funded basic, applied, translational and clinical cancer research across topic areas that Congress directs each year. The page states it has supported over 1,100 awards under 33 congressionally directed topic areas, and that its topic areas represent 72 per cent of cancer-related medical encounters by active-duty service members and their families. It funded melanoma research from FY09 to FY18 and pancreatic cancer research from 2011 before each got a programme of its own.

The current topic areas listed are bladder cancer, blood cancers, brain cancer, colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, oesophageal cancer, germ cell cancers, glioblastoma, liver cancer, lymphoma, mesothelioma, metastatic cancer, myeloma, neuroblastoma, neuroendocrine tumours, paediatric brain tumours, paediatric, adolescent and young adult cancers, sarcoma, stomach cancer and thyroid cancer. The page lists congressional appropriations of $1.174 billion for FY09 to FY25 and $165 million for FY26, and 1,180 awards in FY09 to FY24.

## Notes

- Appropriation totals, award counts and the fiscal-year ranges are the programme page's own figures, read on 4 November 2026; the ranges differ between programmes because each page states its own (some run to FY24, some to FY25), and they are reproduced as given rather than summed or extended.
- The cancer links stand for the named topic areas; where the topic is broad (liver cancer, bladder cancer) the corpus's main record for it (hepatocellular carcinoma, urothelial cancer) is linked.
