## TL;DR

An office of the US defense department that hands out research money which Congress sets aside each year for named diseases. Nine of its programmes are for cancer, among them breast, prostate, ovarian, lung, kidney, pancreatic cancer, melanoma and rare cancers, and patients sit on the panels that choose what is funded.

## Summary

The CDMRP states that it originated in 1992 through a Congressional appropriation to foster novel approaches to biomedical research in response to the expressed needs of its stakeholders, which it names as the American public, the military and Congress. Its office is at Fort Detrick, Maryland, under the Defense Health Agency's research and development organisation. Each programme runs a two-tier review, with peer review panels and programmatic panels, and patients and advocates take part as consumer reviewers.

Its FY26 list of funded research programmes includes nine cancer programmes: Breast Cancer, Kidney Cancer, Lung Cancer, Melanoma, Ovarian Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Prostate Cancer, Peer Reviewed Cancer and Rare Cancers. Each has its own page with a vision, strategic priorities, its appropriations to date and its award count; those are on the programme records linked here. The same list holds non-cancer programmes such as Bone Marrow Failure and Neurofibromatosis, which are not counted as cancer programmes here.
