## TL;DR

Durie-Salmon staging estimated how much myeloma is in the body from bone damage, haemoglobin, calcium and the abnormal protein; ISS and R-ISS have replaced it, but older reports and trials still use it.

## Summary

Durie and Salmon (Cancer 1975) measured myeloma cell mass in 71 patients from the production and turnover of the monoclonal protein and found it could be predicted from four features: the extent of bone lesions, haemoglobin, serum calcium, and the M-protein level in blood and urine. They built a clinical staging system with three tumour cell mass levels, which correlated with response and survival. The census notes it is superseded by ISS and R-ISS but still appears on reports and in older trial eligibility.
