## TL;DR

A mattress cover that heats or cools each side of the bed, with a Hot Flash Mode that cools quickly when tapped. Its only evidence is a preprint by the company's own staff in menopausal women, not people on cancer hormone therapy, and the company says it is not a medical device.

## Summary

The Pod is a temperature-controlled mattress cover made by Eight Sleep, Inc. Its Hot Flash Mode, which the company's page also calls Rapid Cooling Mode, is started by tapping the side of the cover and cools that side to as low as 55°F (about 13°C) for up to 30 minutes before returning to the set temperature. Eight Sleep states that the Pod is not a medical device; the Pod 6 was listed from US$1,999 in October 2026. The only study is a crossover trial posted as a preprint on Research Square in January 2026, in which six of the seven authors are Eight Sleep employees: in 98 peri- and post-menopausal women over 14 nights, active temperature regulation reduced nocturnal hot flashes by 56 ± 39 per cent and improved reported sleep quality by 10 ± 39 per cent, for women taking and not taking hormone replacement therapy. It has not been peer reviewed, and no study has included people with cancer. Hot flushes are among the commonest side effects of tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors and hormone therapy for prostate cancer, and they disturb sleep; the treatments with trial evidence in people with cancer are on the linked hot-flush and acupuncture records, and are worth discussing with the care team before buying a device.

## Fields

- Kind: Technology
- Status: emerging
- Last checked: 2026-09-10
- Also known as: Eight Sleep; Eight Sleep Pod; Hot Flash Mode
- Tags: complementary; supportive-care; evidence:insufficient
- Principle: Keeping the sleeper within their thermoneutral zone through the night, so that a rise in core temperature is less likely to set off a hot flush; this is the mechanism the preprint proposes.
- Strengths: No drug interactions; Each side of the bed is set separately
- Limitations: Only evidence is a company-run preprint, not peer reviewed; No study in people with cancer; Expensive; Not a medical device
