## TL;DR

NeoRecormon is a man-made copy of erythropoietin, the hormone that tells the marrow to make red blood cells. In cancer care it treats anaemia that is causing symptoms in adults having chemotherapy for cancers that do not start in the marrow's myeloid cells.

## Summary

Epoetin beta (NeoRecormon; marketing authorisation holder Roche Registration GmbH) has been authorised in the EU since July 1997 (CHMP opinion 16 October 1996; the EMA page gives 16 July 1997 in its authorisation details and 17 July 1997 in its overview). Its indications are symptomatic anaemia in chronic renal failure in adults and children, symptomatic anaemia in adults with non-myeloid malignancies receiving chemotherapy, and increasing the yield of blood donated before major planned surgery; the overview also lists preventing anaemia in premature babies. In the studies the EMA summarises, 1,204 patients with different cancers were compared with placebo, and it reduced the need for transfusion in people receiving chemotherapy. The corpus's other erythropoiesis-stimulating agents are epoetin alfa, epoetin theta and darbepoetin alfa.

- Modality: Recombinant erythropoietin (erythropoiesis-stimulating agent)
- Mechanism: A copy of the human hormone erythropoietin, which is made by the kidneys and tells the bone marrow to make red blood cells; it works in the body in the same way as the natural hormone (EPAR overview, EMA).
- Approvals: EU 1997: Symptomatic anaemia in adult patients with non-myeloid malignancies receiving chemotherapy; anaemia of chronic renal failure; autologous blood pre-donation
