## Summary

The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute grew out of the Gujarat Cancer Society, founded in 1960, and the M. P. Shah Cancer Hospital, which opened in 1962 and became GCRI in 1972. Its own pages describe it as an autonomous body managed jointly by the Government of Gujarat and the Gujarat Cancer Society, affiliated to B. J. Medical College, and a Regional Cancer Centre that the Government of India has since recognised as the State Cancer Institute for Gujarat.

The institute says it started with 40 inpatient beds; a new building on the Medicity civil hospital campus, inaugurated in March 2019, has 590 beds in its first phase. It runs surgical, medical, paediatric, gynaecological, neuro- and radiation oncology, a bone marrow transplant unit, nuclear medicine, palliative medicine and a Community Oncology Centre with a mobile detection van and a six-cottage hospice. It also manages the Siddhpur and Rajkot cancer centres and teaches DM, MCh and MD courses in oncology. Patients covered by Ayushman Bharat (PM-JAY) and state schemes are treated there.
