Hitoshi Katai is a gastric surgeon at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo. He was first author of the 2020 Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology report of JCOG0912, the Japan Clinical Oncology Group trial that showed laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy was non-inferior to open distal gastrectomy for clinical stage I gastric cancer in relapse-free survival.
