## TL;DR

German surgeon who led ESOPEC, the trial that compared FLOT chemotherapy with CROSS chemoradiotherapy before surgery for oesophageal adenocarcinoma and found FLOT gave longer survival.

## Summary

Jens Höppner is a gastrointestinal surgeon who conceived and led the German ESOPEC trial. Its 2025 New England Journal of Medicine report, of which he was first author, showed that perioperative FLOT chemotherapy improved overall survival compared with neoadjuvant CROSS chemoradiotherapy in resectable oesophageal adenocarcinoma, shifting practice towards perioperative chemotherapy for this disease.
