## TL;DR

Dana-Farber's fundraising arm since 1948, born from a radio broadcast at a boy's bedside; the Boston Red Sox have been its partner since 1953 and the Pan-Mass Challenge its largest source of money.

## Summary

The Jimmy Fund began in 1948 when a national radio broadcast from the bedside of a 12-year-old patient of Sidney Farber, known only as Jimmy, brought in donations for the Children's Cancer Research Foundation. It has been part of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute since then and funds its research and patient care. The Boston Red Sox have partnered with the Jimmy Fund since 1953, with Ted Williams as its best-known champion. The Pan-Mass Challenge bike ride has raised over $1 billion for Dana-Farber through the Jimmy Fund and now accounts for most of its annual revenue.
