## TL;DR

Milan oncologist who led NeoSphere, the trial that showed adding pertuzumab to trastuzumab and docetaxel before surgery clears more HER2-positive breast cancers, the basis for pertuzumab's neoadjuvant approval.

## Summary

Luca Gianni led medical oncology at the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori and then at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, and now leads the Fondazione Michelangelo. He was first author of the 2012 Lancet Oncology report of NeoSphere, the phase 2 trial in which pertuzumab plus trastuzumab and docetaxel produced a higher pathological complete response rate than trastuzumab and docetaxel, and of the NOAH trial of neoadjuvant trastuzumab. His trials helped establish pathological complete response as an endpoint for accelerated approval.
