## Summary

Michael Bloomberg's gifts to Johns Hopkins, his alma mater, exceeded $1.2 billion by 2016 according to the university. In March 2016 he gave $50 million, matched by $50 million from Sidney Kimmel and $25 million from a dozen other donors, to found the Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, uniting more than 100 Hopkins scientists and clinicians on the biology of immune checkpoints, T-cell engineering and the tumour microenvironment, in coordination with the national Cancer Moonshot then led by Vice President Biden. The institute built on Hopkins work that had helped establish PD-1 blockade and the use of mismatch-repair deficiency as a marker for who responds to it. His broader public health philanthropy, on tobacco control in particular, bears on cancer prevention worldwide.
