## Summary

Mitobronitol was developed at the Hungarian company Chinoin and marketed in several European countries for chronic myeloid leukaemia in its chronic phase and for polycythaemia vera and essential thrombocythaemia, achieving haematological control comparable to busulfan with less pulmonary fibrosis. Like other alkylating agents it carried a risk of secondary leukaemia, and it was never approved in the United States. Hydroxycarbamide and interferon alfa displaced it in the 1980s and 1990s, and imatinib made chemotherapy for chronic phase disease obsolete after 2001.
