## TL;DR

If you are on certain benefits or a low income in England, the NHS refunds your travel costs to hospital appointments, including cancer treatment.

## Summary

The Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme repays fares or mileage for NHS-referred hospital appointments to people who receive qualifying benefits or hold an HC2 or HC3 certificate under the NHS Low Income Scheme. Claims are made at the hospital cashier or by post within three months, and the cost of a travelling companion is covered when medically necessary. It is small but it removes one of the commonest reasons for missed appointments. Macmillan advisers can help with the claim.
