## TL;DR

The United States registry of volunteer stem cell and marrow donors, formerly called the National Marrow Donor Program and Be The Match. It finds unrelated donors and cord blood for patients with blood cancers and other blood disorders, in the US and abroad.

## Summary

NMDP describes itself as a global nonprofit in cell therapy, founded in 1987 and known over the years as the National Marrow Donor Program and Be The Match before adopting the single name NMDP in early 2024. Its account of its origin: in 1979 Laura Graves, aged 10, received the first bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor for leukaemia; her parents, with other families, doctors, congressional support and funding from the US Navy, pushed for a national registry, about 10,000 people joined in the first year, and the first transplant as the National Marrow Donor Program followed in 1987.

NMDP lists among its milestones the NMDP Research Sample Repository (2001), the creation with the Medical College of Wisconsin of CIBMTR, the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (2004), recruitment aimed at donors of diverse ancestry (2015), a cryopreservation service for donor products, and the Donor for All initiative using partially matched donors (2023). It reports more than 150,000 lives affected through cell therapy since 1987 and 8,879 in 2025, the most in one year.
