## TL;DR

## Summary

The nationale Netzwerk Genomische Medizin Lungenkrebs grew out of the Cologne Network Genomic Medicine, which from 2012 ran comprehensive molecular pathology for referring hospitals on a single diagnostic platform at University Hospital Cologne under Jürgen Wolf and Reinhard Büttner. Deutsche Krebshilfe rolled the model out nationally with one of its largest single grants from 1 April 2018. The network lists 29 centres and more than 500 partner hospitals and specialist practices, and reports on the actionable alterations in non-small-cell lung cancer: KRAS, EGFR, ALK, BRAF, MET, RET, ROS1, HER2 and NTRK.

The financing is the distinctive part. Testing and a second opinion are paid for under selective contracts for besondere Versorgung under section 140a SGB V, which expressly permit terms departing from the ordinary reimbursement rules; 66 cooperating sickness funds covering 94.79 percent of patients had signed as at June 2025, with contracts dating from 2019. A historical cohort linking the nNGM database to AOK claims found median overall survival of 10.5 months against 8.7 for patients treated outside the network (hazard ratio 0.84) and more first-line use of approved targeted drugs; it was funded by the insurers themselves. Coverage is uneven geographically: 668 German hospitals treating 26 percent of lung cancer cases belong to no network at all.
