The Addis Ababa registry recorded 14,053 new cancers over 2018 to 2022, two thirds of them in women; breast and cervical cancer led in women and colorectal and prostate cancer in men.

## Summary

Published as "Cancer incidence in Addis Ababa, 2018-2022: The only population based cancer registry in Ethiopia". The authors analysed cancers diagnosed between 2018 and 2022 in the population covered by the Addis Ababa population-based cancer registry, about 3.7 million people in 2020 and about 3% of Ethiopia's population, and compared age-standardised rates with estimates for East Africa, West Africa, the Black population of the United States and the world.

- Findings: 14,053 cancers were recorded: 4,584 in men (age-standardised rate 66.5 per 100,000) and 9,469 in women (113.5 per 100,000).; In men the commonest were colorectal cancer (14.3% of male cancers, 9.8 per 100,000), prostate cancer (12.9%, 11.8) and mouth and pharynx cancer (6.6%, 3.9).; In women the commonest were breast cancer (38.8%, 39.8 per 100,000), cervical cancer (14.3%, 18.9) and colorectal cancer (7.2%, 8.9).
- What it means: These are the latest rates from Ethiopia's only population-based registry, and IARC applies the registry's rates to the whole country; they show breast and cervical cancer dominating in women and a relatively high rate of colorectal cancer.
- Caveats: One city, about 3% of the population; rural Ethiopia may differ.; The authors read the low prostate and liver cancer rates as possible under-diagnosis or under-reporting.
