## TL;DR

France's national cancer estimate: 433,136 new cancers in metropolitan France in 2023, projected from local registry data observed to 2018, with the number of new cases roughly doubled since 1990.

## Summary

The estimate comes from the partnership of the Francim registry network, the biostatistics service of the Hospices Civils de Lyon, Santé publique France and INCa. It covers the 19 most frequent cancers (15 in men and 18 in women) and all cancers together, counts invasive tumours only and excludes skin cancers other than melanoma. Incidence for 2023 was projected from registry data observed between 1985 and 2018.

The all-cancer estimate for 2023 is 433,136 new cases, 57 per cent of them in men, at world age-standardised rates of 355 per 100,000 person-years in men and 274 in women; the median age at diagnosis is 70 in men and 68 in women. Since 1990 the all-cancer rate in women has risen by 0.9 per cent a year; in men it rose by 0.3 per cent a year on average, rising until the mid-2000s, then falling and apparently stable since 2012. Changing trends made the 2019 to 2023 projections for prostate and thyroid cancer too uncertain to publish. Combined with the growth and ageing of the population, these rates have roughly doubled the number of new cancers a year since 1990 in both sexes.

- Findings: 433,136 new cancers estimated in metropolitan France in 2023, 57 per cent in men.; World age-standardised incidence 355 per 100,000 person-years in men and 274 in women.; The all-cancer incidence rate in women has risen by 0.9 per cent a year since 1990.; The annual number of new cancers has roughly doubled since 1990 in both sexes.; Prostate and thyroid projections for 2019 to 2023 were not published because recent trends had changed.
- What it means: This is the source of the headline French figure, and it is a projection from registries that cover about a fifth of the population, not a count. It excludes skin cancers other than melanoma, which is one reason it sits below the GLOBOCAN 2022 figure for France, and its prostate figure is carried forward from 2018.
- Caveats: Projected from registry data observed to 2018, not counted for 2023.; Metropolitan France only; the overseas departments have their own registries and are not in this total.; Skin cancers other than melanoma are excluded, unlike GLOBOCAN's all-cancers figure.
