## TL;DR

Validation of a 12-gene score for ductal carcinoma in situ, which separated women by their chance of the disease returning in the same breast after surgery without radiotherapy.

## Summary

In 327 patients from the ECOG E5194 study treated by excision alone, the DCIS score (seven cancer-related and five reference genes, measured with the Oncotype DX assay) was associated with ipsilateral breast events; ten-year risks were 10.6, 26.7 and 25.9 per cent for low, intermediate and high scores.

## Fields

- Kind: Key paper
- Last checked: 2026-11-04
- Journal: Journal of the National Cancer Institute
- Year: 2013
- DOI: 10.1093/jnci/djt067
- Authors: Solin LJ, Gray R, Baehner FL, et al.
- Findings: Ten-year ipsilateral breast event risk 10.6% (low), 26.7% (intermediate), 25.9% (high).
- What it means: A gene-activity score can tell some women with DCIS that their chance of recurrence after surgery alone is lower.
- Caveats: Secondary analysis of a single-arm study.
