## Summary

The institute's own history page dates its founding to 15 March 1927, when Nikolai Nikolaevich Petrov, the founder of Russian oncology, opened a cancer research institute on the site of the Mechnikov general hospital in Leningrad with 100 beds; its history page records that in 1966 it passed to the USSR Ministry of Health, was given Petrov’s name and opened a 40-bed childhood tumour department, and that it marked its ninetieth anniversary in 2017. Its present official name, from the footer of its own site, is ФГБУ «Национальный медицинский исследовательский центр онкологии имени Н.Н.Петрова» Минздрава России. It now sits at Leningradskaya 68 in Pesochny, north of Saint Petersburg, running surgery, radiotherapy, drug therapy, paediatric oncology, molecular diagnostics and residency training, and publishing the journal Voprosy Onkologii (Вопросы онкологии). It is one of the lead sponsors of cancer trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov with a Russian site since 2023.
