## TL;DR

ReSPECT is a UK form, filled in with your doctor or nurse, that records what care you would and would not want in a future emergency when you cannot speak for yourself. It is a recommendation for the team, not a legal document, and can be changed if things change.

## Summary

The Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment (ReSPECT) process creates personalised recommendations for a person's clinical care and treatment in a future emergency in which they are unable to make or express choices. Resuscitation Council UK describes the recommendations as created through conversations between a person, their families and their health and care professionals, and recorded on a non-legally binding form that can be reviewed and adapted if circumstances change.

Its page says the process can be for anyone but has increasing relevance for people with complex health needs, people likely to be nearing the end of their lives and people at risk of sudden deterioration or cardiac arrest, and that it is increasingly being adopted around the UK; the page lists where it has been adopted. Version 3 of the form has been introduced. The process and form were developed over two years with public consultation, patient focus groups and usability testing.
