Small studies suggest it may help prevent delayed diarrhoea from irinotecan, radiation bowel inflammation and mouth ulcers from chemotherapy, but larger and more rigorous trials are needed.","summary":"The formula, from classical Chinese medical texts and made as a standardised Kampo product in Japan, contains prepared pinellia, dried ginger, Chinese skullcap (huang qin), goldthread (huang lian), Asian ginseng, Chinese date and honey-baked licorice. Memorial Sloan Kettering's About Herbs summary reports systematic reviews supporting its use in reflux, functional dyspepsia and gastritis, and findings that it may help prevent chemotherapy-induced delayed diarrhoea, acute radiation enteritis and chemotherapy-induced oral mucositis; it is among the most prescribed herbal formulas for people with colon cancer in Taiwan. Associations with lower colon cancer risk in people with diabetes and better survival after gastric cancer surgery are observational. MSK concludes that larger trials with methodological rigour are needed. Because it contains ginger and Asian ginseng, MSK advises against using it around surgery because of bleeding risk; reported side effects include nausea, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhoea and constipation. Licorice, one of its herbs, can lower potassium at high doses.","status":"phase-2","asOf":"2026-11-04","links":[{"label":"MSK About Herbs: Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang (page last updated 17 March 2025)","url":"https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integrative-medicine/herbs/ban-xia-xie-xin-tang"}],"tags":["complementary","supportive-care","evidence:insufficient"],"related":["berberine","aloe-vera"],"cancers":[],"sections":["supportive-care","chemotherapy","radiation"],"technologies":["integrative-oncology","traditional-chinese-herbal-medicine"],"targets":[],"drugs":["irinotecan"],"companies":[],"institutions":[],"pathways":[],"terms":["mucositis"],"trials":[],"people":[],"bottlenecks":["b-toxicity-qol"],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"principle":"Baicalin from skullcap is proposed to reduce the gut conversion of irinotecan's metabolite to its toxic form and to dampen mucosal inflammation; the other herbs act on gut motility and inflammation.","strengths":["Standardised Kampo product available in Japan","Several small trials for diarrhoea and mucositis"],"limitations":["Trials small and of mixed quality","Bleeding risk around surgery","Contains licorice"]},"route":"/technologies/ban-xia-xie-xin-tang/","neighbours":{"technology":[{"id":"aloe-vera","kind":"technology","name":"Aloe vera","route":"/technologies/aloe-vera/"},{"id":"berberine","kind":"technology","name":"Berberine","route":"/technologies/berberine/"},{"id":"integrative-oncology","kind":"technology","name":"Evidence-based integrative oncology","route":"/technologies/integrative-oncology/"},{"id":"traditional-chinese-herbal-medicine","kind":"technology","name":"Traditional Chinese herbal medicine alongside treatment","route":"/technologies/traditional-chinese-herbal-medicine/"}],"section":[{"id":"chemotherapy","kind":"section","name":"Chemotherapy","route":"/fronts/chemotherapy/"},{"id":"radiation","kind":"section","name":"Radiation Therapy","route":"/fronts/radiation/"},{"id":"supportive-care","kind":"section","name":"Supportive Care & Survivorship","route":"/fronts/supportive-care/"}],"drug":[{"id":"irinotecan","kind":"drug","name":"Irinotecan (and liposomal irinotecan)","route":"/drugs/irinotecan/"}],"term":[{"id":"mucositis","kind":"term","name":"Mucositis and stomatitis","route":"/terms/mucositis/"}],"bottleneck":[{"id":"b-toxicity-qol","kind":"bottleneck","name":"Toxicity and quality of life are undervalued","route":"/bottlenecks/b-toxicity-qol/"}]}}
