It believes they may be rare and does not yet know their cause or how often they happen.","summary":"In a safety communication updated on 8 March 2023 the FDA said it \"is aware of 19 cases of SCC in the capsule around the breast implant from published literature\", that deaths from progression have been reported, and that \"the cause, incidence and risk factors remain unknown\". It first warned of SCC and various lymphomas in the capsule on 8 September 2022. These lymphomas are not the same as breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), which has its own record. Since 22 March 2023 clinicians can report cases to the PROFILE registry run by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Foundation and the FDA. In December 2023 the FDA added mesenchymal tumours, including sarcoma, to the same section of its risks page.","asOf":"2026-11-04","links":[{"label":"FDA safety communication: squamous cell carcinoma in the capsule around breast implants (update 8 March 2023)","url":"https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/safety-communications/update-reports-squamous-cell-carcinoma-scc-capsule-around-breast-implants-fda-safety-communication"},{"label":"FDA: risks and complications of breast implants","url":"https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/breast-implants/risks-and-complications-breast-implants"}],"tags":["devices-gaps-2026-11"],"related":["bia-alcl","breast-implant-associated-alcl","breast-implant-illness"],"cancers":[],"sections":[],"technologies":["breast-implants"],"targets":[],"drugs":[],"companies":[],"institutions":[],"pathways":[],"terms":[],"trials":[],"people":[],"bottlenecks":[],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"provenance":{"editedBy":"OnCo device gap fill (openFDA, accessdata.fda.gov, NICE, NHS Drug Tariff Part IX, FDA, maker and society pages)","editedOn":"2026-11-04"},"category":"Side effects"},"route":"/terms/breast-implant-capsule-cancers/","neighbours":{"term":[{"id":"breast-implant-illness","kind":"term","name":"Breast implant illness (systemic symptoms with breast implants)","route":"/terms/breast-implant-illness/"},{"id":"bia-alcl","kind":"term","name":"Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma","route":"/terms/bia-alcl/"}],"cancer":[{"id":"breast-implant-associated-alcl","kind":"cancer","name":"Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma","route":"/cancers/breast-implant-associated-alcl/"}],"technology":[{"id":"breast-implants","kind":"technology","name":"Breast implants for reconstruction (silicone gel, saline and shaped cohesive gel)","route":"/technologies/breast-implants/"}]}}
