Of those invited, 20,672 (67 percent) completed the first round and more than 90 percent accepted repeat rounds. Over ten years 481 screened and 483 control participants were diagnosed with colorectal cancer, but there were 205 deaths from it in the screening group against 249 in controls, a mortality ratio of 0.82 (95% CI 0.68 to 0.99, p=0.03). Incidence was unchanged and mortality fell, which is the signature of earlier detection rather than prevention; the flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy trials that followed aimed at prevention by removing adenomas.","status":"positive","asOf":"2026-09-24","links":[{"label":"Funen: randomised study of screening for colorectal cancer with faecal-occult-blood test (Lancet 1996)","url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(96)03430-7"}],"tags":[],"related":[],"cancers":["colorectal"],"sections":["early-detection","prevention"],"technologies":["colorectal-screening"],"targets":[],"drugs":[],"companies":[],"institutions":[],"pathways":[],"terms":["fit-test"],"trials":["nottingham-fob","minnesota-fob"],"people":[],"bottlenecks":[],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"phase":"3","setting":"People aged 45 to 75 in Funen, Denmark: biennial Haemoccult faecal occult blood testing against no screening","sponsor":"Odense University Hospital, Funen","result":"Colorectal cancer mortality ratio 0.82 (95% CI 0.68 to 0.99) over ten years, with unchanged incidence.","yearReported":1996,"enrolled":61933,"enrolledBasis":"randomised","enrolledNote":"30,967 people were randomised to screening and a matched control group of similar size; the trial began in 1985 and predates the registries.","outcomes":[{"endpoint":"Colorectal cancer mortality","primary":true,"unit":"mortality ratio","arms":[{"name":"Biennial faecal occult blood screening","n":30967,"value":0.82,"note":"205 deaths"},{"name":"Control","value":1,"note":"249 deaths"}],"ci":[0.68,0.99],"p":"0.03","source":"https://doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(96)03430-7"}],"replication":"Published in the same issue of the Lancet as the Nottingham trial, which found a 15 percent reduction."},"route":"/trials/funen-fob/","neighbours":{"cancer":[{"id":"colorectal","kind":"cancer","name":"Colorectal cancer","route":"/cancers/colorectal/"}],"section":[{"id":"early-detection","kind":"section","name":"Early Detection & Screening","route":"/fronts/early-detection/"},{"id":"prevention","kind":"section","name":"Prevention & Risk","route":"/fronts/prevention/"}],"technology":[{"id":"colorectal-screening","kind":"technology","name":"Colorectal cancer screening (colonoscopy, FIT, stool DNA, blood)","route":"/technologies/colorectal-screening/"}],"term":[{"id":"fit-test","kind":"term","name":"Faecal immunochemical test (FIT)","route":"/terms/fit-test/"}],"trial":[{"id":"minnesota-fob","kind":"trial","name":"Minnesota Colon Cancer Control Study","route":"/trials/minnesota-fob/"},{"id":"nottingham-fob","kind":"trial","name":"Nottingham faecal occult blood screening trial","route":"/trials/nottingham-fob/"}]}}
