It sits inside the Israel Center for Disease Control, a unit of the Ministry of Health based on the Sheba Medical Center campus at Tel Hashomer, and links to the population registry by national identity number, which is what makes follow-up and family linkage possible at national scale.\n\nWhat is reportable is worth knowing before quoting Israeli figures: all invasive and in-situ malignancies, neoplasms of uncertain or unknown behaviour, and benign as well as malignant tumours of the brain and central nervous system, but not basal or squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. Israeli non-melanoma skin cancer statistics are therefore not a count of those cancers and should not be compared with registries that do record them.\n\nThe registry audited itself by sending abstractors into the medical records departments, pathology and cytology laboratories and oncology and haematology institutes of 39 medical facilities to identify every reportable case diagnosed or treated in 2005, then linking to the database. Completeness was 93.7 percent for all reportable disease, 96.8 percent for invasive solid tumours and 88.0 percent for haematopoietic tumours; cases from the index year were less likely to be present than older cases, which is the signature of a reporting lag and the reason the most recent year of any registry report should be read as provisional.
