In a matched comparison, patients at the clinic lived no longer than those treated conventionally and had consistently worse quality of life, and its coffee enemas have caused deaths.","summary":"Virginia Livingston-Wheeler's regimen combined a strict vegetarian diet, BCG vaccine, an autogenous vaccine made from the patient's own samples, coffee enemas, vitamins, antibiotics and counselling, on the theory that a bacterium she named Progenitor cryptocides caused cancer when immunity weakened. Memorial Sloan Kettering's About Herbs summary notes that no independent researcher confirmed a link between that bacterium and cancer. A self-selected, matched-cohort prospective comparison of patients at the Livingston-Wheeler clinic and at a conventional cancer hospital found no difference in survival and consistently lower quality of life in the Livingston-Wheeler group. The American Cancer Society urged patients not to use the treatment in a 1990 position paper. MSK lists nutrient deficiencies, anaemia and malabsorption from the diet, malaise and fever from the vaccine, and a death from fluid and electrolyte imbalance after four coffee enemas a day for eight weeks.","status":"negative","asOf":"2026-11-04","links":[{"label":"MSK About Herbs: Livingston-Wheeler therapy (page last updated 24 February 2021)","url":"https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integrative-medicine/herbs/livingston-wheeler-therapy"}],"tags":["complementary","supportive-care","evidence:harm"],"related":["budwig-diet"],"cancers":[],"sections":["supportive-care"],"technologies":["alternative-medicine-instead-of-treatment","gerson-therapy-detox-regimens"],"targets":[],"drugs":[],"companies":[],"institutions":[],"pathways":[],"terms":["unproven-diet-claims"],"trials":[],"people":[],"bottlenecks":["b-misinformation"],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"principle":"Immune stimulation against a proposed cancer-causing microbe whose existence was not confirmed.","strengths":["Was compared against conventional care, so the question has an answer"],"limitations":["No survival difference and worse quality of life in a matched cohort","Coffee enemas linked to deaths","Diet deficient in calcium, iron, vitamins D and B12 and protein"]},"route":"/technologies/livingston-wheeler-therapy/","neighbours":{"technology":[{"id":"alternative-medicine-instead-of-treatment","kind":"technology","name":"Alternative medicine used instead of standard treatment","route":"/technologies/alternative-medicine-instead-of-treatment/"},{"id":"budwig-diet","kind":"technology","name":"Budwig diet (flaxseed oil and cottage cheese)","route":"/technologies/budwig-diet/"},{"id":"gerson-therapy-detox-regimens","kind":"technology","name":"Gerson therapy, coffee enemas and 'detox' regimens","route":"/technologies/gerson-therapy-detox-regimens/"}],"section":[{"id":"supportive-care","kind":"section","name":"Supportive Care & Survivorship","route":"/fronts/supportive-care/"}],"term":[{"id":"unproven-diet-claims","kind":"term","name":"Unproven diet claims (alkaline, juice, 'anti-cancer' diets)","route":"/terms/unproven-diet-claims/"}],"bottleneck":[{"id":"b-misinformation","kind":"bottleneck","name":"Misinformation and unproven therapies","route":"/bottlenecks/b-misinformation/"}]}}
