The United States approved it in 2008 for adults with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who had not responded to steroids, immunoglobulins or splenectomy, later extended to children and, separately, to increase survival after acute exposure to myelosuppressive doses of radiation (haematopoietic syndrome of acute radiation syndrome).
