Small studies in advanced lung cancer reported longer survival, but each tested a different recipe and the designs were too weak to trust.","summary":"Developed by Alexander Sun, the product exists in several formulations; the marketed version contains soybean, shiitake, mung bean, red date, scallion, garlic, lentil, leek, hawthorn fruit, onion, American ginseng, angelica root, licorice, dandelion root, senega root, ginger, olive, sesame and parsley. Memorial Sloan Kettering's About Herbs summary reports animal studies suggesting anticancer effects and small human studies in which use alongside conventional treatment was associated with longer survival, weight maintenance and better performance status in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer, and says larger randomised studies are needed. The NCI PDQ summary, no longer being updated, adds that each study tested a different formulation, making comparison difficult, and that design weaknesses raise doubts about the reliability of the findings. The common side effect is fullness or bloating. No drug interactions have been reported, but MSK points out that several ingredients (licorice, ginseng, ginger, soy, hawthorn, lentinan from shiitake) have known interactions of their own.","status":"phase-2","asOf":"2026-11-04","links":[{"label":"MSK About Herbs: Sun Farms Vegetable Soup (page last updated 23 February 2022)","url":"https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/integrative-medicine/herbs/sun-farms-vegetable-soup"},{"label":"NCI PDQ: Selected Vegetables/Sun's Soup","url":"https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/cam/hp/suns-soup-pdq"}],"tags":["complementary","supportive-care","evidence:insufficient"],"related":["gonzalez-regimen","newcastle-disease-virus-alternative"],"cancers":["nsclc"],"sections":["supportive-care","nutrition-lifestyle"],"technologies":["integrative-oncology","medicinal-mushrooms-reishi-turkey-tail","traditional-chinese-herbal-medicine"],"targets":[],"drugs":[],"companies":[],"institutions":[],"pathways":[],"terms":[],"trials":[],"people":[],"bottlenecks":["b-misinformation"],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"principle":"A mixture of foods and herbs with proposed immune-stimulating and anticancer properties; no single active ingredient has been identified.","strengths":["Food-based and generally well tolerated","Was taken alongside, not instead of, treatment in the studies"],"limitations":["Small studies with weak designs","Formulation changed between studies","Ingredients with their own interactions"]},"route":"/technologies/suns-soup-selected-vegetables/","neighbours":{"technology":[{"id":"integrative-oncology","kind":"technology","name":"Evidence-based integrative oncology","route":"/technologies/integrative-oncology/"},{"id":"gonzalez-regimen","kind":"technology","name":"Gonzalez regimen (pancreatic proteolytic enzymes)","route":"/technologies/gonzalez-regimen/"},{"id":"medicinal-mushrooms-reishi-turkey-tail","kind":"technology","name":"Medicinal mushrooms: reishi, turkey tail, shiitake and others","route":"/technologies/medicinal-mushrooms-reishi-turkey-tail/"},{"id":"newcastle-disease-virus-alternative","kind":"technology","name":"Newcastle disease virus as an alternative cancer therapy","route":"/technologies/newcastle-disease-virus-alternative/"},{"id":"traditional-chinese-herbal-medicine","kind":"technology","name":"Traditional Chinese herbal medicine alongside treatment","route":"/technologies/traditional-chinese-herbal-medicine/"}],"cancer":[{"id":"nsclc","kind":"cancer","name":"Non-small-cell lung cancer","route":"/cancers/nsclc/"}],"section":[{"id":"nutrition-lifestyle","kind":"section","name":"Diet, Exercise & Lifestyle","route":"/fronts/nutrition-lifestyle/"},{"id":"supportive-care","kind":"section","name":"Supportive Care & Survivorship","route":"/fronts/supportive-care/"}],"bottleneck":[{"id":"b-misinformation","kind":"bottleneck","name":"Misinformation and unproven therapies","route":"/bottlenecks/b-misinformation/"}]}}
