The American College of Radiology convened committees in 2012 to write management advice for nodules found incidentally, a standard ultrasound vocabulary, and a risk system built on that vocabulary; the ACR TI-RADS white paper (Tessler and colleagues, JACR 2017) sets out which nodules warrant biopsy or follow-up ultrasound on the basis of their appearance. The ACR's teaching material scores composition, echogenicity, shape, margin and echogenic foci to reach the risk level, with the aim of cutting biopsies of benign nodules.\n\nThe name follows BI-RADS. Other societies publish their own versions: the European EU-TIRADS and the Korean K-TIRADS. A nodule that is biopsied is then reported in the Bethesda system.","asOf":"2026-11-04","links":[{"label":"Tessler et al., ACR Thyroid Imaging, Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS): white paper of the ACR TI-RADS Committee (JACR 2017)","url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jacr.2017.01.046"},{"label":"American College of Radiology, TI-RADS","url":"https://www.acr.org/clinical-resources/clinical-tools-and-reference/reporting-and-data-systems/ti-rads"}],"tags":[],"related":["bethesda-category","eu-tirads","k-tirads"],"cancers":["thyroid"],"sections":[],"technologies":["ultrasound","thyroid-fna-molecular"],"targets":[],"drugs":[],"companies":[],"institutions":[],"pathways":[],"terms":[],"trials":[],"people":[],"bottlenecks":[],"keyPapers":[],"journals":[],"dependsOn":[],"notes":[],"category":"Diagnostics & imaging"},"route":"/terms/ti-rads/","neighbours":{"term":[{"id":"bethesda-category","kind":"term","name":"Bethesda category (thyroid cytology)","route":"/terms/bethesda-category/"},{"id":"bi-rads","kind":"term","name":"BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System)","route":"/terms/bi-rads/"},{"id":"thyroid-differentiated-staging","kind":"term","name":"Differentiated and anaplastic thyroid cancer staging (AJCC chapter 73)","route":"/terms/thyroid-differentiated-staging/"},{"id":"eu-tirads","kind":"term","name":"EU-TIRADS (European thyroid nodule ultrasound system)","route":"/terms/eu-tirads/"},{"id":"k-tirads","kind":"term","name":"K-TIRADS (Korean thyroid nodule ultrasound system, 2021)","route":"/terms/k-tirads/"},{"id":"pi-rads","kind":"term","name":"PI-RADS (Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System)","route":"/terms/pi-rads/"}],"cancer":[{"id":"thyroid","kind":"cancer","name":"Thyroid cancer","route":"/cancers/thyroid/"}],"technology":[{"id":"thyroid-fna-molecular","kind":"technology","name":"Thyroid nodule FNA, Bethesda cytology & molecular classifiers","route":"/technologies/thyroid-fna-molecular/"},{"id":"ultrasound","kind":"technology","name":"Ultrasound","route":"/technologies/ultrasound/"}]}}
