It grew from work begun in Ulm in 1989 by Shraga Goldmann and Carlheinz Müller, who collected pseudonymised donor data from German blood banks with support from the Stefan Morsch Foundation; German Cancer Aid's investment took the database to almost 50,000 entries by 1991, and the ZKRD was founded in May 1992 after the federal health ministry commissioned the German Red Cross Blood Donor Service of Baden-Württemberg to set up a national registry.\n\nThe ZKRD matches with its own OptiMatch program and has access to donors registered with 26 German donor centres and to most internationally registered donors.
