In Japan, children, teenagers and young adults with cancer can get part of the cost of freezing eggs, embryos or sperm, and of later fertility treatment, paid through a national scheme run by their prefecture. Ask the cancer consultation support centre at your hospital.
Fukushima Prefecture's page describes the national subsidy (小児・AYA世代のがん患者等の妊孕性温存療法研究促進事業), begun in April 2021 (令和3年4月), under which each prefecture subsidises part of the cost of fertility preservation and of assisted reproduction using specimens frozen by it, for children and AYA-generation patients who wish to have children in future, to reduce the financial burden and to spread effective and safe fertility preservation based on clinical data. Prefectures designate the hospitals that may provide it: preservation centres approved by the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology or the Japanese Urological Association, and assisted reproduction centres approved by the former. The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's implementation outline was last partly revised on 7 April 2026 (令和8年4月7日). Each prefecture publishes its own application pages; cancer consultation support centres at designated cancer hospitals answer questions.
