Atara Biotherapeutics is the Californian company behind Ebvallo, the first approved off-the-shelf T-cell therapy, which treats Epstein-Barr virus lymphoma after transplant using T cells from healthy donors.
Overview
Atara Biotherapeutics develops allogeneic Epstein-Barr virus-specific T-cell therapies. Tabelecleucel (Ebvallo), made from banked donor T cells matched by HLA, was approved in the European Union in December 2022 and by the FDA in 2025 for relapsed or refractory EBV-positive post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease; Pierre Fabre holds worldwide commercial rights. Atara's EBV-targeted CAR-T programme ATA3219 for lymphoma and lupus was paused in 2025 as the company restructured.
