Beams is a French medical device company building a handheld probe that picks up signals from PET tracers so surgeons can see leftover tumour tissue during cancer surgery. Its first study looks at brain scans soon after surgery for glioblastoma.
Beams (registered on ClinicalTrials.gov as Beta Emitting Accurate Monitored Systems) is a Paris medtech company co-founded by physicists, engineers and clinicians, including chief executive Virginie Simon and neurosurgeon Stéphane Palfi, with scientific roots at IJCLab, Université Paris Cité. Its TRIOP beta probe uses sub-millimetric scintillation detectors to detect the beta emissions of PET radiotracers in the operating field, aiming to show surgeons residual tumour tissue in real time. The company was an i-Lab 2023 laureate in medical technologies. Its first registered cancer trial, NCT07274397, a single-centre feasibility and safety study with Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris of 18F-DOPA PET-MRI within 48 hours of surgery for suspected glioblastoma in 15 patients, was posted on ClinicalTrials.gov in December 2025.
