PanTera is building a plant in Belgium to make actinium-225, the scarce radioactive metal used in a new generation of alpha-particle cancer treatments. It is a joint venture of IBA and the Belgian nuclear research centre SCK CEN.
PanTera is a joint venture of IBA (Ion Beam Applications) and SCK CEN, the Belgian nuclear research centre, founded in 2022 to secure large-scale production of actinium-225 (Ac-225) for targeted alpha therapy. The plan combines SCK CEN's radium-226 stocks with IBA's Rhodotron electron accelerator, with a stated goal of more than 100 Ci a year by 2029 using the gamma (photonuclear) route. In September 2024 PanTera closed a EUR 93 million Series A led by EQT Life Sciences, with Kurma Partners, Eurazeo, Korys, Paladin and PMV; with IBA and SFPIM converting EUR 7.2 million of loans and EUR 33.8 million of debt, total funding reached EUR 134 million. IBA's shareholding was expected to fall from 47.8 per cent to about 31.3 per cent after the round.
