PhotoDynamica is a Massachusetts start-up building low-cost light equipment for photodynamic therapy, a treatment in which a light-activated drug destroys cancer cells, starting with early oral cancers in places with few resources.
Photodynamic Solutions, Inc., trading as PhotoDynamica, develops photodynamic therapy (PDT) technology for oral and skin cancers. Its co-founders include Tayyaba Hasan of Harvard Medical School and Jonathan Celli of the University of Massachusetts Boston, whose NIH-funded work tested low-cost PDT for early oral cancers in a 30-patient trial at Aligarh Muslim University in India, according to the company. A 2026 National Cancer Institute STTR award funds low-cost, image-guided photodynamic treatment of oral cancers and potentially malignant oral lesions in resource-limited settings, using FDA-approved aminolevulinic acid as the photosensitiser.
