Stamford Pharmaceuticals injects a modified common-cold virus carrying an immune-signalling gene into skin cancers, and is testing it alongside a standard tablet for advanced basal cell carcinoma.
Stamford Pharmaceuticals, Inc., which moved its head office to Austin, Texas in 2023, is a clinical-stage oncology company developing gene therapies for skin and visceral cancers. SP-002 is an adenoviral vector (serotype 5) that delivers the gene for interferon gamma into the tumour. A phase 2 study tests SP-002 with the hedgehog pathway inhibitor vismodegib in locally advanced basal cell carcinoma (NCT06344052); the company plans a phase 2/3 study in high-risk nodular basal cell carcinoma in 2027 and has an open IND for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. Its SP-500 platform conjugates the vector with small-molecule payloads, with preclinical candidates for bladder, pancreatic, head and neck, prostate and breast cancer. Its first registered cancer trial, NCT06344052, was posted on ClinicalTrials.gov in April 2024; an earlier phase 2a study of SP-002 (NCT04416516) is registered under a different sponsor name.
