Xcision Medical Systems
Xcision makes GammaPod, a radiotherapy machine built only for breast cancer: the patient lies face down with the breast held gently in a cup while many small cobalt beams focus on the tumour, allowing treatment in five sessions or fewer instead of several weeks.
Overview
Xcision Medical Systems, LLC develops stereotactic radiotherapy for breast cancer. Its first product, GammaPod, is described as the first and only stereotactic radiotherapy system designed specifically for early-stage breast cancer. The patient lies prone with the breast immobilised in a vacuum-assisted cup while a rotating array of cobalt-60 sources delivers a focused dose to a partial breast volume, enabling courses of five treatments or fewer instead of four to six weeks of conventional radiotherapy. The design is based on a patent licensed from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. GammaPod has FDA 510(k) clearance and CE marking. Listed clinical sites are the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center and UT Southwestern, and a GammaPod Research Consortium is studying shortened courses and preoperative ablative doses. Xcision joined the MedTech Innovator 2023 cohort. No financing round could be sourced.
