Akita University's teaching hospital, which the health ministry designates as Akita Prefecture's hub hospital for cancer care.
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare lists it as the prefectural cancer care hub hospital (都道府県がん診療連携拠点病院) for Akita Prefecture, the top tier of the ministry's designated cancer care hospitals. Its own history records that the Akita University School of Medicine was established in April 1970, the first medical school set up at a national university after the Second World War, and that the hospital moved to its present site beside the school in September 1976. It offers emergency care 24 hours a day and reports ISO 9001 quality-management certification since May 2005.
