A US foundation set up by the runner Gabe Grunewald, who had adenoid cystic carcinoma, that funds rare cancer research and runs free exercise programmes for cancer survivors.
The Brave Like Gabe Foundation was founded by Gabriele "Gabe" Grunewald, a professional runner who had a rare salivary gland cancer, to support rare cancer research and to help cancer survivors through physical activity, according to its mission page; she died in June 2019. Its impact page lists the grants it has made: more than $450,000 to the Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Foundation since 2018 from its annual 5K, $500,000 with Brooks Running for the Brave Fellowship for post-doctoral researchers at Fred Hutch (2020 to 2023) and a 2024 grant to Fred Hutch's TRACER rare cancer initiative, a three-year $600,000 grant from 2022 to Memorial Sloan Kettering on outcome disparities for Black women with endometrial cancers, a three-year $300,000 grant from 2023 to the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center for paediatric osteosarcoma, and a grant to Dana-Farber for a study of implantable microdevices that test drug responses in adenoid cystic carcinoma tumours. It also runs a free 12-week walk-run training programme for cancer survivors in Minneapolis. The IRS lists it in Saint Paul, Minnesota, with tax exemption from March 2019.
