A private foundation in North Carolina that funds biomedical scientists in the United States and Canada, especially at the start of their careers.
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund was founded in 1955 as the corporate foundation of the pharmaceutical company Burroughs Wellcome Co., and in 1993 a $400 million gift from the Wellcome Trust made it an independent private foundation with no ties to its founding company (Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Our history). Based in Durham, North Carolina, it runs competitive, peer-reviewed awards for scientists at career transitions across the United States and Canada, and supports science education in North Carolina (Burroughs Wellcome Fund website).
