A New York charity, founded in 1953, that funds research on cancer immunotherapy and helps patients learn about immunotherapy clinical trials.
The Cancer Research Institute was founded on 27 January 1953 by Helen Coley Nauts, daughter of the surgeon William B. Coley, and Oliver R. Grace Sr., with a $2,000 grant from Nelson Rockefeller, according to its history page. Its founding purpose was to find the scientific basis of Coley's bacterial toxin treatments, and it describes itself as having founded the field of tumour immunology. In 1971 it appointed the cancer immunologist Lloyd J. Old as medical director. Today it funds immunotherapy research at many institutions, seeks partnerships with companies developing immunotherapies and educates patients about immunotherapy trials. The IRS Business Master File lists revenue of about $35 million for the tax year ending June 2025.
