Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto is among the largest hospitals in the world by bed numbers and is a teaching hospital of the University of the Witwatersrand. Its cancer services include medical oncology, paediatric haematology-oncology, surgical oncology and breast and gynaecological cancer clinics for a very large public-sector population, with radiotherapy referred to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. The hospital hosts research on breast cancer in African women (the South African Breast Cancer and HIV Outcomes study), HIV-associated malignancies and paediatric cancer outcomes, and trains a large share of South Africa's oncology workforce.
