The teaching hospital of Fukushima Medical University, Fukushima Prefecture's only advanced treatment hospital and its designated hub hospital for cancer care.
The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare lists it as the prefectural cancer care hub hospital (都道府県がん診療連携拠点病院) for Fukushima Prefecture, the top tier of the ministry's designated cancer care hospitals. The hospital describes itself as Fukushima Prefecture's sole Designated Advanced Treatment Hospital, with 39 departments and 778 beds, and states that 650 physicians, 950 nurses and 600 allied professionals work there. It traces its roots to a medical lecture centre of the Shirakawa Temporary Hospital in the early Meiji era; the medical university was approved in 1952 and the hospital moved to Hikarigaoka in 1988.
