A Bihar state medical institute and university in Patna whose State Cancer Institute gives radiotherapy and cancer care to patients who would otherwise travel to Delhi or Vellore.
IGIMS was established by the IGIMS Act of 1984 as an autonomous institute of the Government of Bihar and a statutory university recognised by the UGC. Its history page explains that the state set it up because large numbers of Bihar patients were travelling to AIIMS New Delhi, PGI Chandigarh and Vellore for treatments including cancer therapy, at great cost to their families.
The institute houses a State Cancer Institute. Its radiation oncology department describes precision radiotherapy, IMRT, IGRT, SRT and SBRT, multidisciplinary care with medical and surgical oncology, training of radiation oncologists, physicists and technologists, and community awareness work across the state.
