Overview
Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital opened in 2002 as a purpose-built quaternary and tertiary referral hospital for KwaZulu-Natal, run by the provincial health department in a public-private partnership and serving as a teaching hospital of the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine. It provides radiation oncology, medical oncology, clinical haematology, paediatric oncology and specialist surgery for a province with one of the highest HIV burdens in the world, making cervical cancer, Kaposi sarcoma and HIV-associated lymphoma prominent in its case mix. It is the only public radiotherapy provider for much of the province.
