Telangana's government cancer hospital in Hyderabad, a Regional Cancer Centre since 1996 that now has 750 beds and registers about 15,000 new patients a year.
The MNJ Cancer Hospital & Radium Institute opened as a hospital of about 40 beds in 1955, inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru; the institute's account names Nawab Mehdi Nawaz Jung as its founder and calls it the first centre in Andhra Pradesh to provide cancer care. The Government of India accorded it Regional Cancer Centre status on 12 March 1996, after which the state made it an autonomous society governed by a council chaired by the Chief Minister.
Its own figures describe a 750-bed State Cancer Institute and teaching hospital serving more than 1.5 lakh patients a year, with about 15,000 new cases registered annually, 24 departments, a paediatric ICU, a bone marrow transplant unit, robotic surgery, PET-CT and three linear accelerators. A new 300-bed block is under construction, and the institute runs 16 academic programmes and a mobile cancer screening bus.
