Overview
The Pan-Mass Challenge is an annual two-day bike ride across Massachusetts. Its founder Billy Starr organised the first ride in 1980 with 36 riders and 10 volunteers; it now involves more than 6,800 riders and 3,500 volunteers. The PMC states that since 1980 it has raised $1.125 billion for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, that 100 percent of all rider-raised funds go directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, and that it provides 67 percent of the Jimmy Fund's annual revenue. It is the largest athletic fundraiser for a single institution in the United States.
