A philanthropic 311-bed cancer hospital at Thakurpukur, Kolkata, founded by radiotherapist Saroj Gupta in 1973 to care for poorer patients from rural Bengal.
In early 1973 Dr Saroj Gupta, then a young radiotherapist, formed a society with doctors, social workers and philanthropists to build a cancer centre for patients who could not get a hospital bed, with special emphasis on the underprivileged. It began on marshy land at Thakurpukur donated by the family of Chintaharan Das.
The institute describes itself as a philanthropic organisation giving cancer care at affordable cost and carrying out cancer research. It is now a 311-bed dedicated cancer hospital on a 16-acre campus, with diagnostic, radiotherapy, surgical and paediatric cancer services, and it offers a medical visa appointment form for patients from Bangladesh.
